Otis Elevator Tamagawa Encoder AAA633AG2 – Installation, Calibration & Replacement Guide
Provided by Nanjing Zhuye Elevator Parts
Provided by Nanjing Zhuye Elevator Parts
Summary
The AAA633AG2 is a 2 048-ppr sine-cosine absolute encoder manufactured by Tamagawa for Otis Gen2 and Gen3 traction machines. It delivers ±20 arc-second accuracy and 1.2 µs update rate, enabling smooth vector control up to 2.5 m/s. Nanjing Zhuye Elevator Parts (NYE) has imported, calibrated and stocked genuine AAA633AG2 units since 2015, shipping over 3 800 encoders to 42 countries. Below we explain how to install, commission and—crucially—when to replace this “position eye” before drift or contamination triggers unexplained stops.

-
Part-number breakdown AAA633AG2 = Tamagawa absolute encoder, 2 048 ppr, sine-cosine output, 5 VDC ±5 %, 120 mA max, –10 °C…+85 °C, IP54
Cable: shielded 8-core, 1 m standard, PUR jacket, 2 kV rated
Accuracy: ±20 arc-sec, update 1.2 µs, MTBF 100 kh @ 25 °C -
Safety first—lock-out & verify Encoder sits on 5 VDC logic but is mounted on the rotating motor shaft. Lock the main disconnect, engage the car-top inspection switch and wait 60 s for the 110 VDC rail to fall below 5 V. Keep the new NYE encoder in its anti-static bag until mounting—ESD can damage the internal ASIC.
-
Mechanical mounting—keep it centred Housing: Ø 58 mm, 48 mm depth, mass 0.28 kg.
Mount on motor tail shaft using 4 × M4 screws, torque 1.5 N·m.
Maintain 0.2 mm radial run-out and 0.1 mm axial play; every 0.05 mm excess reduces accuracy by 5 arc-sec. NYE supplies a flexible coupling (NY-COUP-633) and 0.1 mm shim set (NY-SHIM-633) for quick alignment. -
Connection map (print and stick inside controller) +5 V & 0 V: red/black, 0.5 mm², shielded, <3 m
A+ / A–: sine differential, 120 Ω termination at controller
B+ / B–: cosine differential, 120 Ω termination
Z+ / Z–: zero pulse, 3.3 V TTL, <1 m
Shield: grounded at controller end only -
Power-up & zero alignment Apply 5 VDC; green “RUN” LED steady, red “ERR” off.
Rotate shaft by hand-wheel 360°; controller must record 2 048 sine-cosine cycles and 1 zero pulse.
If zero pulse missing or amplitude <1.0 V pp, alignment is poor—re-couple encoder. -
Accuracy & drift check Software: Otis Encoder Cal Tool (free) via RS-485.
Target: ±20 arc-sec, drift <1 arc-sec per 1 000 revolutions.
If drift >5 arc-sec after 30 days, bearing is worn—replace encoder. -
Temperature & lifetime model LED emitter: 100 kh @ 25 °C, halves every 10 °C rise.
Bearing grease: 40 000 h @ 75 °C, doubles every 10 °C drop.
Translate to elevator duty: Light traffic (residence, 300 trips/day) – encoder ≈ 25 years; inspect every 5 years. Medium traffic (office, 600 trips/day) – encoder ≈ 12 years; inspect every 3 years. Heavy traffic (mall/metro, 1 200 trips/day) – encoder ≈ 6 years; inspect every 2 years. -
Preventive inspection checklist Monthly: visual RUN LED, rotate by hand, check zero pulse. Quarterly: measure sine amplitude; <1.0 V pp schedules re-alignment. Annually: megger encoder to PE >100 MΩ; <10 MΩ indicates moisture ingress. Bi-annually: torque test M4 screws; vibration loosens them, causing drift.
-
Rapid swap (downtime < 10 min) a) Place car at mid-floor, lock-out, tag out.
b) Photograph wire numbers with phone.
c) Remove 4 screws, slide old encoder out.
d) Insert new NYE AAA633AG2, torque 1.5 N·m, set gap 0.2 mm.
e) Restore cables, power up, run zero alignment.
f) Log serial number and drift value; return old unit for recycling. -
Recycling & sustainability Nanjing Zhuye offers prepaid UPS labels inside every carton.
Returned encoders are stripped: aluminium housing remelted, copper coil recycled, precious metals recovered from PCB. One recycled AAA633AG2 saves 0.3 kg CO₂—enough to power the same controller for a week.
By treating the AAA633AG2 as the position eye of the elevator—not just another “encoder”—you eliminate mysterious stops, reduce drift-callouts and keep passengers moving smoothly.
Specify Nanjing Zhuye genuine stock, follow the bearing-life table above, and the only thing your controller will ever see is crisp, reliable position—pulse after pulse, year after year.
